San Diego Mission Bay Master Plan Update: De Anza Natural Moves Forward
Mission Bay is moving toward a major long-term transformation focused on restoring natural habitat, improving recreation, public access and infrastructure. One of the biggest pieces is De Anza Natural, a major amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan focused on reshaping the northeast corner of the bay.
📌 De Anza Natural Includes:
• 140+ acres of new wetlands
• 48.5 acres for low-cost visitor accommodations, including camping
• Improved recreation & public access
• Trails and waterfront connections
• Habitat & water-quality improvements
• Greater resilience to sea-level rise
Recent reporting has put the potential long-term transformation at up to $1 billion, although final costs have not yet been determined.
📆 Latest Update:
The California Coastal Commission recently approved the amendment with modifications. Additional steps and detailed planning still need to happen before construction can begin.
Bottom Line: De Anza Natural is one major piece of a much broader, long-term effort to improve and restore Mission Bay—not a $1 billion project beginning construction all at once.
